I came across this strange story from Hawaii about a Muslim cleric warning his fellow Muslims to avoid any contact with another Muslim because he is not “a true Muslim.”
In a August 21, 2017 MeriNews.com article titled “In distant Hawaii an Arab cleric expels a Pakistani scientist” S.K. Saksena wrote:
This narrative would possibly not have been penned, if our family friend Dr [Saleem] Ahmed, a soft spoken, scholarly, devout Muslimhad not been expelled by the Arab cleric of Honolulu’s small mosque, funded by the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. The cleric also claims that Hawaii was not discovered by Captain Cook, but by Arabs. Much in the style of our own PN Oak who claims Taj Mahal to be of Hindu origin!

Not understanding the nuances of any religion, I would not venture to pass judgment. I leave it to Akbar S Ahmed, of Brookings Institution: ‘…Some Muslims have moved away from their own identity perhaps because of the controversy surrounding Islam. We came upon an example in Honolulu, that most pluralist of American cities. Hawaii has a small Muslim community of between 3,000 and 4,000, which I was asked to address after Friday prayers at the main mosque. Hakim Ouansafi, the Arab head of the mosque committee, and the president of the Muslim Association of Hawaii, welcomed us but warned us not to be in touch with Saleem Ahmed, someone we were anxious to meet. Hakim said irately that Saleem reputedly gave interviews in the media and talked to interfaith communities claiming to represent Islam, which he did not. Indeed, according to Hakim, Saleem was not even a true Muslim.’ [Emphasis added]
The key phrase in this article by Mr. Saksena is, “Some Muslims have moved away from their own identity perhaps because of the controversy surrounding Islam.”
This moving away from Islam is apostasy and causes Fitna in the Muslim community (the Ummah) in Hawaii.
A key to understanding why some Muslims, like Hakim Ouansafi, expel (excommunicate if you will) a fellow Muslimhad is captured in one word: Fitnaphobia.
The Mayo Clinic defines phobia as, “[An] overwhelming and unreasonable fear of an object or situation that poses little real danger but provokes anxiety and avoidance.” Fitna describes “[F]orces that cause controversy, fragmentation, scandal, chaos, or discord within the Muslim community, disturbing social peace and order.”
Fitnaphobia is defined as:
An overwhelming and unreasonable fear of forces that cause controversy, fragmentation, scandal, chaos or discord within the Muslim community, thereby disturbing social peace and order within the Ummah (the Muslim community).
Fitnaphobia is based upon Quran versus 2: 191-193, which reads:
And kill them wherever you overtake them and expel them from wherever they have expelled you, and fitnah is worse than killing. And do not fight them at al-Masjid al- Haram until they fight you there. But if they fight you, then kill them. Such is the recompense of the disbelievers.
And if they cease, then indeed, Allah is Forgiving and Merciful.
Fight them until there is no [more] fitnah and [until] worship is [acknowledged to be] for Allah . But if they cease, then there is to be no aggression except against the oppressors.
Fitnaphobia requires the killing, expelling and fighting disbelievers where ever they are found. Fitna (resistance) “is worse than killing.” A Fitnaphobe will kill because disturbing the peace and order of the Muslim community is worse than the slaughter of innocents, such as the 5,000 annual honor killings by Muslims of their family members.
