Amazon removes doormats featuring Qur’an verses from sale at demand of Hamas-linked CAIR

The Amazon listing for this doormat is indeed gone, but you can still see it cached here. Clearly this product was not intended to be offensive; it wasn’t the creation of some “Islamophobes” trying to show their contempt for the Qur’an. It was marketed as “Holy Quran Door Mat Floor Mat Rug Indoor/Outdoor/Front Door/Bathroom Mats.”

Yes, “Holy.” And the image of this doormat makes it clear that this was presented as an affirmation of Islam, not an insult to it. But Hamas-linked CAIR said that it “received complaints about the items, which are offensive to Muslims because the Quranic verses would be stepped on or otherwise disrespected by customers.”

And it’s true: in Islamic cultures, to show someone the bottom of one’s shoes or to walk on something is considered a supreme insult. There is a very different sensibility in the West; for example, Amazon is still selling doormats featuring Bible verses, and as far as I know no Jews or Christians are complaining.

The worst part of this, however, is that Amazon readily complied with Hamas-linked CAIR’s demand. There is nothing intrinsically offensive about this doormat: it doesn’t feature any insult to Islam, or the Qur’an, or Muhammad. But Hamas-linked CAIR claims it’s offensive, and that’s that. Even if it were intended to be disrespectful to Islam, Amazon should have remembered the freedom of speech and kept it on sale. After all, Amazon sells numerous products that are offensive to Christians; see, for example, here and here and here, and it doubtful that they would remove them from sale if Christian groups complained; nor should they do so. We live in a free society and don’t have blasphemy laws.

At least not yet. But now a precedent has been set: if Hamas-linked CAIR thinks something is “offensive” to Muslims, Amazon will remove it. How long will it be before Hamas-linked CAIR starts demanding that books that criticize jihad terror and Sharia oppression of women, gays and others also be dropped by Amazon? And how long will it be before Amazon complies? Get them while you can.

Doormats featuring verses from the Quran were promptly removed from Amazon on Friday.

The Council on American-Islamic Relations complained to Amazon on Thursday about more than a dozen bathroom and outdoor mats, which carried verses and the word Allah in Islamic calligraphy.

“CAIR received complaints about the items, which are offensive to Muslims because the Quranic verses would be stepped on or otherwise disrespected by customers,” the advocacy group said in a statement.

A spokesman for CAIR, Ibrahim Hooper, said the retailer assured him that the links to those products had been removed and that Amazon was conducting an audit of its site….

A spot check by The Post showed that the items CAIR flagged were indeed gone.

But CAIR forwarded other questionable items to Amazon on Friday, including a toilet seat with an image of the Quran as well as a bathroom floor rug and a towel set with an image of the holy book.

“In the past 24 hours all of these items were brought to our attention,” Hooper told The Post….

“All sellers must follow our selling guidelines and those who do not will be subject to action. The products in question are being removed from our store,” an Amazon spokesperson said.

DNC Chair Hakim Muhammad (Keith Ellison) demands Amazon stop selling books from SPLC-designated “hate groups”

Halkim Muhammad (aka Keith Ellison) wants Amazon to stop selling material from people who have been smeared by the SPLC. He takes for granted that the SPLC should be trusted. But reality is different: Southern Poverty Law Center: ‘Our Aim in Life Is to Destroy These Groups, Completely’

On Wednesday, 47 leaders of conservative nonprofits sent an open letter to the media warning against using the notorious “hate map” put out by the Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC). The leaders denounced any news organization that would cite the SPLC’s list of “extremists” and “hate groups” as if it carried moral authority. “The SPLC is an attack dog of the political left” and should be treated as such, the leaders wrote.

“To associate public interest law firms and think tanks with neo-Nazis and the KKK is unconscionable, and represents the height of irresponsible journalism,” the leaders declared. “All reputable news organizations should immediately stop using the SPLC’s descriptions of individuals and organizations based on its obvious political prejudices.” (PJM)

The letter addressed “Members of the Media” and strongly warned against the SPLC. The leaders characterized the organization as “a discredited, left-wing, political activist organization that seeks to silence its political opponents with a ‘hate group’ label of its own invention and application that is not only false and defamatory, but that also endangers the lives of those targeted with it.”

This insidious letter from Hakim Muhammad (Keith Ellison) to Jeff Bezos is, in its essence, more sharia (Islamic law): this is enforcement of blasphemy laws, do not insult Islam. How much more of our freedom are we going to allow them to seize?

Keith Ellison’s letter to Jeff Bezos focuses on an alleged neo-Nazi’s material being sold at Amazon and published on Amazon’s self-publishing, but Ellison makes more sweeping statements, particularly his opening gambit: “I am writing to you with my concerns about the amount of money Amazon has made from the sale of literature and music published by entities identified as ‘hate groups’ by the Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC).”

Clearly Ellison wants Amazon, which has (with Barnes & Noble) a virtual monopoly on book sales in the U.S., to stop selling books by people designated as “hate groups” by the Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC). Like the establishment media, Ellison assumes that the SPLC is a reliable, unbiased arbiter of what is and isn’t a hate group. The SPLC’s hard-Left bias and determination to destroy legitimate conservative groups by lumping them in with neo-Nazis and white supremacists is nowhere recognized.

The far-Left Bezos likely also thinks that the SPLC is a reliable authority, and so it is entirely possible that he will comply with Ellison’s demands and purge Amazon of all materials by people that the SPLC has smeared and defamed. Given Amazon’s dominance of the book market, that would be a serious blow to the freedom of speech, as the SPLC is making an all-out attempt to delegitimize the full spectrum of opinion that dissents from the Leftist agenda — on Islam, immigration, social issues and more. If Amazon drops SPLC-designated “hate” material, there should ensue a national discussion about whether the SPLC is really a reliable authority, and whether only one viewpoint should be allowed in the public square. If not, this will just be another nail in the coffin of the freedom of speech in the U.S.

Ellison has spoken at a convention of the Islamic Society of North America (ISNA). Yet ISNA has actually admitted its ties to Hamas, which styles itself the Palestinian arm of the Muslim Brotherhood. The Justice Department actually classified ISNA among entities “who are and/or were members of the US Muslim Brotherhood.”

It gets worse. In 2008, Ellison accepted $13,350 from the Muslim American Society (MAS) to go on a pilgrimage to Mecca. The Muslim American Society is a Muslim Brotherhood organization: “In recent years, the U.S. Brotherhood operated under the name Muslim American Society, according to documents and interviews. One of the nation’s major Islamic groups, it was incorporated in Illinois in 1993 after a contentious debate among Brotherhood members.” That’s from the Chicago Tribune in 2004, in an article that is now carried on the Muslim Brotherhood’s English-language website, Ikhwanweb.

Also, the Hamas-linked Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) raised large amounts of for Ellison’s first campaign, and he has spoken at numerous CAIR events. Yet CAIR is an unindicted co-conspirator in a Hamas terror funding case — so named by the Justice Department. CAIR officials have repeatedly refused todenounce Hamas and Hizballah as terrorist groups.

Dear Mr. Bezos:

I am writing to you with my concerns about the amount of money Amazon has made from the sale of literature and music published by entities identified as “hate groups” by the Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC). I would like to know whether Amazon is committed to ceasing the sale of all products that promote hateful and racist ideologies. For a company with a policy prohibiting the sale of “products that promote or glorify hatred, violence, racial, sexual, or religious intolerance or promote organizations with such views,” there appear to be a disturbing number of groups with hateful, racist, and violent agendas making money using Amazon’s platform.

Since the election of Donald Trump, hate groups have been on the rise, and racist violence has swelled in this country. The increase in political organizing around hateful ideologies like white nationalism has provided a growing base of support for racist policies like the Muslim ban, and the “zero tolerance” immigration policies that have driven family separation. Over the last decade, hate groups have used Amazon to fund their activities and spread their ideologies. Historically, Amazon has not responded effectively to this issue, and continues to allow hate groups and SPLC-identified neo-nazis and white nationalist writers to make money using its platform.

According to a recent report entitled Delivering Hate by the Partnership for Working Families and the Action Center on Race and the Economy (ACRE), available online at https://bit.ly/2tX37yK as of June 2018, Amazon has been selling baby onesies, toys, children’s Halloween costumes, flags, clothing, and jewelry emblazoned with nazi, neo-nazi, white nationalist, anti-Semitic, Islamophobic, and violent, racist imagery. I am disturbed that Amazon would make racist and hateful products for children available on its platform.

Further, there appears to be a staggering amount of neo-nazi and white nationalist propaganda available for sale on Amazon, both in e-book and print format. For example, five volumes of the Occidental Quarterly, a racist journal edited by SPLC-identified neo-nazi Kevin MacDonald, remain for sale on Amazon. Your company states that it takes 30-65% of revenue from all Kindle e-book sales. Amazon also takes 40% of revenue from the sale of physical books published by its CreateSpace self-publishing platform. I am alarmed that hate groups can make money by selling propaganda on Amazon, and that Amazon is able to profit from these transactions.

As stated earlier, Amazon has a strict policy against hateful and racist products on its platform. The availability of all the material listed in the aforementioned report indicates to me that either Amazon is willfully refusing to enforce its own policies against the sale of racist products, or its sheer size makes it impossible for the company to police itself. In either event, Amazon must immediately cease doing business with groups that promote racist violence. To better understand how hateful propaganda makes its way to be sold on Amazon, and how your company plans to correct this problem, I seek the following information:

1. How much money has Kindle Direct Publishing made from the sale of materials published by SPLC-identified hate groups since 2015?
a. How much money has Amazon made from the sale of SPLC-identified hate groups via its CreateSpace self-publishing service since 2015?
2. How much money has Amazon made from the sale of SPLC-identified hate music, since 2015?
3. How does Amazon enforce its policies against the sale of racist and hateful items?
4. Will Amazon destroy any merchandise with hate symbols currently in Amazon-controlled warehouses within the next three months?
5. Will Amazon stop publishing physical and digital materials from SPLC-identified hate groups in the next three months?

I respectfully request answers to my questions by July 31, 2018.

Amazon pulls Allah doormats, ‘but you can still wipe your feet on Jesus’

Allah-themed doormats had been for sale on Amazon, much to the chagrin of Muslims who complained to the online retailer that wiping one’s feet upon the name of Allah isn’t cool, Heat Street reported.

And it isn’t just Allah doormats. There are Christian and Hindu ones, too, but British Labour Party Muslim Councillor Mariam Khan complained that the Allah doormats were “extremely offensive to Muslims”. She even received an apology from Amazon, and preached about the mats being out of sync with the Amazon promotion of “racial and religious harmony”, with its commercial depicting a priest and an imam ordering gifts for each other.

amazon-product-jpg-galleryBut let’s face it: if Amazon really bought into the “offense” and harmony argument, it would have also removed the Jesus mats, too. They certainly care about political correctness, since they also removed the Hindu ones; but they likely care more about their own necks. Woe be unto anyone who offends Muhammad or Islam. It is a global decree.

Take the case of Charlie Hebdo magazine, which had to find someone else to make fun of to stay in business after being terrorized and subjugated by jihadist thugs. So instead, they’re now satirizing critics of Islam. South Park also altered an episode that depicted Muhammad after receiving jihadist threats. Now just imagine what may be going through the minds of Amazon execs at the thought of not removing a mat with the name of Allah on it: terror.  So Amazon decided to remove its Allah mats, but it’s ok to “wipe your feet on Jesus”

As for Jesus, however, Amazon still sells doormats bearing his image and name as of Tuesday. There are doormats with Bible verses referencing Christ, and even one showing him holding a cross like a light saber — its title? “Jedi Jesus.”

Christianity is a religion of peace, so who cares about offending Christians? It comes with no deadly price. Anyone can insult Christianity and even the Prince of Peace Himself for any reason at all, with no fear of adverse consequences. Wiping your feet on Jesus will not place anyone on a kind of death row, with execution possibly coming at anytime and anyplace. But woe be unto Amazon to continue carrying mats deemed offensive to Islam. They sure have conveyed that they don’t want to risk turning into the next Charlie Hebdo.

The ferment we see in the Muslim world today is not solely due to despotic political systems, and it is not solely due to failing economies and the poverty they breed. Rather, it is also due largely to Islam itself and the incompatibility of certain of that faith’s key tenets with modernity.

But much of the modern world seems ready and willing to fall into line.
