Pro-ISIS Media Outlet Shares Poster Threatening Attacks On Transport Systems

MEMRI, May 5, 2018:

On April 26, 2018, a pro-Islamic State (ISIS) media outlet published a digitally created poster on Telegram showing a man sitting in a mass transit system, holding a knife.

Ancient Qur’an manuscript discovered to have been written over erased Bible manuscript

The academics are enthused. “This is a very important discovery for the history of the Qur’an and early Islam,” says Eléonore Cellard. “It’s quite extraordinary,” bubbles Romain Pingannaud, and “very relevant.”

Relevant to what? Pingannaud apparently means that it’s relevant to the contact between Christian and Muslim communities today.

Very well. Let’s examine the implications of this discovery in light of its contemporary relevance. Qur’anic palimpsests, that is, manuscripts in which the Qur’anic text is written over another text that has been erased, are rare. Why? “We think this is because the Qur’an is such an important text and although vellum was very expensive, the Qur’an was always written on new material. It’s highly revered and so they would use brand new material,” says Pingannaud.

But not this time. This one is written over a passage of the Old Testament. The scholars seem to think that is wonderful. “We have here a witness of cultural interactions between different religious communities,” says Cellard. Pingannaud says that “it shows the contact between communities in the first centuries of Islam.”

What kind of “contact between communities” and “cultural interaction” does it show? It shows that contrary to the modern-day historical revisionism that holds that the Muslim conquerors treated the conquered people with respect, a respect they also accorded to their religious traditions, the Muslim overlords actually treated the conquered people and their religions with active contempt, as befitting the people whom the Qur’an designates “the most vile of created beings” (98:6). In Islamic theology, the Old Testament is not a divine revelation; it is a corrupted version of a divine revelation, and thus worthy of no respect; it can be erased and replaced by a Qur’an manuscript with no second thought. There are several Qur’anic passages from which this idea of the corruption of the Bible has been derived:

“So woe to those who write the scripture with their own hands, then say, ‘This is from Allah,’ in order to exchange it for a small price. Woe to them for what their hands have written and woe to them for what they earn.” (Qur’an 2:79)

“And indeed, there is among them a party who alter the Scripture with their tongues so you may think it is from the Scripture, but it is not from the Scripture. And they say, ‘This is from Allah,’ but it is not from Allah . And they speak untruth about Allah while they know.” (Qur’an 3:78)

“Among the Jews are those who distort words from their usages and say, ‘We hear and disobey’ and ‘Hear but be not heard’ and ‘Ra’ina,’ twisting their tongues and defaming the religion. And if they had said, ‘We hear and obey’ and ‘Wait for us,’ it would have been better for them and more suitable. But Allah has cursed them for their disbelief, so they believe not, except for a few.” (Qur’an 4:46)

“So for their breaking of the covenant We cursed them and made their hearts hard. They distort words from their usages and have forgotten a portion of that of which they were reminded. And you will still observe deceit among them, except a few of them. But pardon them and overlook. Indeed, Allah loves the doers of good. And from those who say, ‘We are Christians,’ We took their covenant; but they forgot a portion of that of which they were reminded. So We caused among them animosity and hatred until the Day of Resurrection. And Allah is going to inform them about what they used to do. O People of the Book, there has come to you Our Messenger making clear to you much of what you used to conceal of the Scripture and overlooking much. There has come to you from Allah a light and a clear Book.” (Qur’an 5:13-15)

This hadith makes the idea that the Jews and Christians have corrupted their scriptures explicit:

“Narrated Ubaidullah: Ibn `Abbas said, ‘Why do you ask the people of the scripture about anything while your Book (Qur’an) which has been revealed to Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ) is newer and the latest? You read it pure, undistorted and unchanged, and Allah has told you that the people of the scripture (Jews and Christians) changed their scripture and distorted it, and wrote the scripture with their own hands and said, “It is from Allah,” to sell it for a little gain. Does not the knowledge which has come to you prevent you from asking them about anything? No, by Allah, we have never seen any man from them asking you regarding what has been revealed to you!’” (Bukhari 9.92.461)

So why wouldn’t Muslims erase a Christian manuscript, or use one that had been erased, to write the Qur’an? They considered the Jewish and Christian scripture previously written on the palimpsest to be worthless.

Yes, this discovery does illuminate the interaction between the Muslims and their subject communities. It shows the supremacist assumptions of the Muslims, which were abundantly on display at the time this manuscript was written, as you can see in my forthcoming book The History of Jihad From Muhammad to ISIS (click here to preorder).

We’re not told what the specific Qur’an and Bible passages on the manuscript are. It would be interesting to see if the Bible passage is any of the Qur’an’s source material. As I show in my book Did Muhammad Exist? An Inquiry Into Islam’s Obscure Origins, the Qur’an was cobbled together from earlier Jewish, Christian, and other sources. This manuscript might illuminate that process, unless academia’s dogmatic determination to shield Islam from all critical inquiry prevents such examination of it.

“Passages from the Bible discovered behind Qur’an manuscript,” by Alison Flood, Guardian, April 25, 2018:

…French scholar Dr Eléonore Cellard was looking for images of a palimpsest page sold a decade earlier by Christie’s when she came across the auction house’s latest catalogue, which included fragments from a manuscript of the Qur’an which Christie’s had dated to the eighth century AD, or the second century of Islam. Scrutinising the image, she noticed that, appearing faintly behind the Arabic script, were Coptic letters. She contacted Christie’s, and they managed to identify the Coptic text as coming from the Old Testament’s Book of Deuteronomy – part of the Torah and the Christian Old Testament.

“This is a very important discovery for the history of the Qur’an and early Islam. We have here a witness of cultural interactions between different religious communities,” said Cellard, who is attached to the College de France.

“It’s quite extraordinary,” said Christie’s specialist Romain Pingannaud. “…And what’s even more fascinating is it is on top of passages from the Old Testament … It shows the contact between communities in the first centuries of Islam; it’s very relevant.”

Christie’s…believes that the manuscript is likely to have been produced in Egypt, which was home to the Coptic community, at the time of the Arab conquest. It said that the fragments “resonate with the historical reality of religious communities in the Near East and as such are an invaluable survival from the earliest centuries of Islam”.

While the writing style of the Qur’an scribe dates it to around the eighth century or early ninth century, it is not possible to identify how much older the ghostly Coptic writing is…

Qur’anic palimpsests are “extremely rare”, according to Christie’s, with only a handful having been previously recorded, none of which were copied above a Christian text….

“We think this is because the Qur’an is such an important text and although vellum was very expensive, the Qur’an was always written on new material. It’s highly revered and so they would use brand new material,” said Pingannaud….

VIDEO: Another U.S. Imam incites to violence against the Jews

This has now become common practice. Islamic Jew-hatred, it’s in the Quran. Here is yet another U.S. espousing annihilation views from the United States, joining a long list of other American Muslim leaders who have promoted Jew-hatred and incited violence against Jews and Israelis.

There is little difference between the norming of Islamic Jew-hatred and that of of the Nazis in the 1930s. Nothing in the mainstream press about it. No apoplectic pundits and commentators on CNN, MSNBC, ABC, waving a finger about it on the Sunday morning shows. On the contrary, daily bleating about “islamophobia” is the cultural order of the day. Again, eerily similar to the tactics of the Nazis as well.

These are dark days in America, my friends.

U.S.-BASED IMAM ADVOCATES VIOLENCE AGAINST ISRAEL IN ANTI-SEMITIC SERMON

IPT News, April 20, 2018:

An extremist imam used his Friday prayer last week to call on Muslims and Palestinians to disavow non-violent protest against Israel. But the imam was not preaching from the West Bank or Gaza Strip. This imam was yet another spiritual leader espousing radical views from the United States, joining a long list of other U.S.-based Muslim leaders who have promoted anti-Semitism and incited violence against Jews and Israelis.

Mohamed Elbar – an imam at the Islamic Society of Bay Ridge (a.k.a. Masjid Musab) – delivered a sermon in Brooklyn April 13 that amounted to violent incitement.

Elbar was not trying to keep this view secret in a private setting of committed individuals. On the contrary, his sermon was live-streamed on the Islamic Society’s official Facebook page, broadcast publicly to its followers and translated by the Investigative Project on Terrorism (IPT). It remained accessible as of this publication.

Elbar reserved harsh criticism for some unidentified imams and preachers who he said issued religious decrees (fatwas) calling for non-violence against Israel. According to the imam, these preachers only advocate direct confrontations if there is symmetry in power.

Too “many imams in our diverse Arab countries” are issuing fatwas that prohibit violent resistance against Israel, he said, “so long as the occupier or the aggressor [Israel] possesses more power than you [Palestinians] possess.”

“They [other imams] tell them [individuals in the Palestinian territories]: ‘You don’t have the kind of weaponry that the Zionist entity has, so it’s not right for you to stand up to the Zionist entity, because if you stand up to them and get killed by the Zionist entity, it’s as if you killed yourself,’” Elbar preached.

After denouncing non-violent protest, Elbar rhetorically asks his congregation: “So what should we do? How are we going to defend our land?”

By offering such passionate criticism, Elbar is encouraging violence and promoting terrorism among Palestinians to coerce concessions from Israel.

He warned that if Palestinians and Muslims “give up” the fight against Israel, then Israelis will destroy the Al Aqsa Mosque in Jerusalem. He also engages in anti-Semitic historical revisionism by claiming that the Jews will re-build a “Temple of no value and no historical evidence” over the mosque’s ruins.

“It [Al Aqsa Mosque] will get demolished if we abandoned it and an alleged Temple of no value and no historical evidence of its existence would be built to replace it,” Elbar claims.

Propagating such a destructive scenario is a form of violent incitement, especially since previous false allegationsof Israeli changes to the religious status quo in Jerusalem have led to outbreaks in Palestinian violence. Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas espoused a similar view in the past, which encouraged a wave of Palestinian stabbing attacks and terrorism in Jerusalem and surrounding areas.

Elbar, who is also a professor of Islamic Studies at the Graduate Theological Foundation and teaches “Da’wah related courses” (proselytizing Islam) at the Manara Institute, has a history of making radical statements.

In a Dec. 8 sermon – following President Donald Trump’s recognition of Jerusalem as Israel’s capital –Elbar referred to Jerusalem “as a sole Islamic property,” denying any Jewish or Christian ties to the city. In the final prayer, Elbar prayed for “Allah to liberate Palestine from the occupiers [Jews].”

In 2014, the IPT covered a rally featuring Elbar as a speaker, organized by the Egyptian Americans for Democracy and Human Rights in front of the Saudi consulate in New York City. Protesters demanded that Muslim Brotherhood leader Mohammed Morsi be reinstated as Egypt’s president. Elbar led chants accusing the Saudi king of “selling Egypt to the Jews” while members of the crowd chanted that Saudis were “dirtier than the Jews.”

Elbar’s history of anti-Semitic and radical Islamist preaching resembles extremist sentiment embraced by several other imams in the United States.

For example, Sheikh Raed Saleh Al-Rousan, the founder of the Tajweed Institute’s Houston branch, used a Dec. 8sermon to repeat a notorious Quranic hadith that radical preachers often invoke to mobilize Muslims against Jews.

That same day, Sheikh Aymen Elkasaby from the Islamic Center of Jersey City, called for “the plunderer oppressors (Jews)” to be destroyed.

“So long as the Al-Aqsa Mosque remains prisoner in the hands of the Jews… So long as the Al-Aqsa Mosque remains under the feet of the apes and pigs, this nation will remain humiliated,” Elkasaby preached, adding that he wishes to achieve “martyrdom on the threshold of the Al-Aqsa Mosque.”

In another instance, a Texas-based imam, Sheikh Ramadan Elsabagh, called for Israel’s destruction in a recorded prayer posted to his Facebook page on Dec. 7, according to an IPT translation.

American Islamist groups have remained silent in the wake of these sermons, and have not outright condemned the imams’ behavior. Now, Elbar joins a growing list of radical U.S.-based Muslim leaders who continuously espouse extremist views. Muslim leaders who explicitly glorify terrorism against Jews deserve more scrutiny in American media and political circles.

Priest is murdered by migrant whom he welcomed into his presbytery

This may be another jihad attack, akin to the jihad murder of Fr. Jacques Hamel in France. On the other hand, this priest may not have been murdered by a Muslim migrant; no information is given at all about his murderer, and very little information of any kind. However, this incident stands as a kind of parable of what is in store for Europe as a whole: it will be destroyed by those whom it welcomed and attempted to aid.

“Germany – A priest murdered by the immigrant whom he welcomed in his presbytery,” translated from “Allemagne – Un prêtre assassiné par l’immigré qu’il a accueilli dans son presbytère,” by Pierre-Alain Depauw, Medias-Presse.info, February 26, 2018 (thanks to David):

Germany – In Berlin, a 54-year-old priest, chaplain of the French parish, was murdered last Thursday by an immigrant he had hosted in his presbytery.

The chaplain of the French parish of Berlin was murdered Thursday evening by a person whom he had gathered in his presbytery. This priest was 54 years old and he was unanimously appreciated by all his community. Our chaplaincy of the French from abroad is in mourning.

Catholic Church sets out a vision for closer ties with Islam

Had Charles Martel and the Franks lost their battle against the jihadis at Tours in 732, the eighteenth-century English historian Edward Gibbon envisioned the continent’s complete Islamization:

A victorious line of march had been prolonged above a thousand miles from the rock of Gibraltar to the banks of the Loire; the repetition of an equal space would have carried the Saracens to the confines of Poland and the Highlands of Scotland; the Rhine is not more impassable than the Nile or Euphrates, and the Arabian fleet might have sailed without a naval combat into the mouth of the Thames. Perhaps the interpretation of the Koran would now be taught in the schools of Oxford, and her pulpits might demonstrate to a circumcised people the sanctity and truth of the revelation of Mahomet.

And now here we are: the jihadis lost at Tours, but their defeat was not complete, and now victory is at hand: “the interpretation of the Koran” is now “taught in the schools of Oxford,” or at least at the Oxford Centre for Islamic Studies. Is there a Center for Christian Studies at al-Azhar? Of course not. Has any Islamic entity ever sought improved ties with the Catholic Church? Don’t be silly.

“Dialogue” and interfaith outreach always and in every case go only one way, with fond Christians such as Vincent Nichols appealing for peace and friendship to Muslim leaders, who use the resulting “dialogue” to silence Christians who are talking about Muslim persecution of Christians and the Qur’an’s teaching regarding Christianity, and to engage in subtle dawah, Islamic proselytizing, with the participating Christians, and in any documents resulting from the “dialogue.”

So Vincent Nichols is pictured here planting a tree at the Oxford Centre for Islamic Studies, but that isn’t the only hole he is digging.

“Leave them; they are blind guides. And if a blind man leads a blind man, both will fall into a pit.” (Matthew 15:14)

“Catholic Church sets out a vision for closer ties with Islam,” by Michael Binyon, The Times, March 3, 2018 (thanks to David):

How can dialogue between faiths lead to a deeper spiritual understanding? Is there not always a danger that both sides will talk across each other without listening or just agree on the bare minimum they have in common?

These questions were raised this week by Cardinal Vincent Nichols, the Archbishop of Westminster, when he made the first visit by the head of the Roman Catholic Church in Britain to the Oxford Centre for Islamic Studies, the dazzling new college that aims to become the country’s principal centre for the academic study of Islam.

He said that dialogue between faith and society would be “significantly impoverished” if dialogue between faiths were characterised by suspicion and hostility or were simply non-existent….

Archbishop of Canterbury: Islamic law incompatible with British laws

ISLAMIC RULES ARE INCOMPATIBLE WITH BRITISH LAWS, CLAIMS ARCHBISHOP OF CANTERBURY

ISLAMIC RULES ARE INCOMPATIBLE WITH BRITISH LAWS WHICH HAVE DEVELOPED OVER 500 YEARS AND SHARIA LAW SHOULD NEVER BECOME PART OF THE BRITISH LEGAL SYSTEM, THE ARCHBISHOP OF CANTERBURY HAS DECLARED.

By Sam Sholli, The Express, Feb 24, 2018:

Justin Welby also claimed that British law has “underlying values and assumptions” that come from a clearly Christian tradition.

Archbishop Welby set out his reasons why sharia should not win official status in Britain in his book, called ’Reimagining Britain’.

He said: “Sharia law is not just about punishments.

“It is something of immense sophistication, but it comes from a very different background of jurisprudence to the one from which British law has developed over the past 500 years.”

His comments have come after the release of a Home Office report earlier this month that said all couples marrying in mosques should also have to go through a legally-binding civil marriage ceremony to protect wives from injustices under sharia.

In his book, the Archbishop claimed the right of people to choose their own husband or wife, and the need for monogamous relationships was challenged by some of the British muslim population.

The Archbishop said: “There has been and remains a demand for the introduction of those aspects of sharia law that affect family and inheritance.

“The problem is reimagining Britain through values applied in action can only work where the narrative of the country is coherent and embracing.

“Sharia, which has a powerful and ancient cultural narrative of its own, deeply embedded in a system of faith and understanding of God, and thus especially powerful in forming identity, cannot become part of another narrative.

“Accepting it in part implies accepting its values around the nature of the human person, attitudes to outsiders, the revelation of God, and a basis for life in law, rather than grace, the formative word of Christian culture.

“They face enormous pressures and need one legal basis of oversight and one philosophical foundation of understanding.

“For these reasons, I am especially sympathetic towards those Islamic groups that do not seek the application of sharia law into the family and inheritance law of this country.”
There are believed to be approximately 85 sharia tribunals in the UK which settle disputes over matters concerning issues such as divorce and business among those who are willing to accept their jurisdiction.

However, concerns have been raised over how women are treated when appearing before sharia tribunals.

The Home Office sharia review, carried out by academic Mona Siddiqui, found that some of the tribunals operate discriminatory rules.

The review found that men can divorce simply by demanding one, whilst women are often obliged to pay large sums to do so.

Human Rights Organizations Refuse to Assist Arab Victims of Palestinian Torture

There it is. Their lawyer approached a number of human rights organizations, only to be met with the response: “Assistance? Only for someone suing Israel.” If it helps the Jews, no dice, even if non-Jews, Muslims, Christians, whoever are the victims.

The left’s hypocrisy on full display. Again.

HUMAN RIGHTS ORGANIZATIONS REFUSE TO ASSIST ARAB VICTIMS OF PALESTINIAN TORTURE

United with Israel, January 29, 2018:

A group of Arabs who were tortured by the Palestinian Authority have learned that human rights groups are only interested in cases that harm Israel’s reputation.

By: Yoni Ozery, Institute of Zionist Strategies

Fifty-two Israeli and Palestinian Arabs, victims of torture at the hands of the Palestinian Authority (PA), have recently won a lawsuit filed against the PA. The next stage – that of determining damages – has subsequently encountered difficulties due to the need for relevant medical specialists. Their lawyer approached a number of human rights organizations only to be met with the response: “Assistance? Only for someone suing Israel.”

Last June, the Jerusalem District Court issued a precedential ruling according to which the PA is responsible for the physical and emotional injury caused to no less than 52 plaintiffs – Israeli and Palestinian Arabs suspected by the PA of collaboration with Israel – and charged the PA with their compensation. The victims represented in the trial have subsequently encountered difficulty in determining the level of compensation, being unable to locate and finance doctors willing to provide them with the professional assessment necessary for determining disability levels.

As a result, the law office representing the plaintiffs, Rom-Arbus-Kedem-Zur, approached several human rights organizations requesting assistance in finding specialists in a range of medical fields. The only response forthcoming to their appeal came from the “Blue and White” Human Rights Movement of the Institute for Zionist Strategies, who willingly answered the call.

As mentioned, the court verdict published this July, reveals an in-depth account of each of the plaintiffs and his circumstances. The resulting picture is one of widespread detentions throughout Judea and Samaria of those suspected of collaborating with Israel. The vicious torture described by the plaintiffs included beatings with metal wires and rubber pipes, cigarette burns, being hung for hours, and sleep- and food-deprivation. As a result, the plaintiffs sustained severe damage to both their physical and mental health.

“An Israeli court determined that the responsibility for the plaintiffs’ injures lies with the Palestinian Authority on which the court imposed obligation for paying damages”, said their lawyer Adv. Barak Kedem, during an interview with 360. He also explained that medical specialists were now required to evaluate the victim’s disabilities and thereby enable the court to set damages.

Kedem revealed that due to the complexity of the sustained injuries, the cost of each victim’s examination may reach thousands of shekels, however no finance is forthcoming for this cause. “These are people who are suffering from a number of parallel disabilities – physical disability, psychiatric, urological and others. Some are suffering from five or more disabilities and are therefore in need of experts to determine their overall disability profile.”

ASSISTANCE? ONLY FOR PALESTINIANS WHO SUE ISRAEL

The lawyers consequently turned to a range of human rights organizations in a plea for assistance, a plea that was, as mentioned previously, generally either refused or simply ignored. “We need doctors to volunteer to examine the plaintiffs and also financial assistance to pay for their expenses”, Kedem stresses. “Thus far we have only received a response from the ‘Blue and White’ Human Rights Movement, from the ‘Honenu’ organization and from the Public Committee Against Torture in Israel. The remaining organizations refused to help, claiming that they only assist Palestinians who sue the State of Israel.”

Nave Dromi, director of the Institute for Zionist Strategies’ “Blue and White” Human Rights Movement, told 360 that the movement decided to assist the victims of the PA torture and attempted to interest specialist physicians in their case, only to face similar difficulties.

“We are a national-Zionist human rights organization which strives to show that it’s possible to be a human rights organization and love Israel,” Dromi explains.

“We already have doctors who cooperate and help us, but due to the large number of claims and cases, we tried to approach others with a request for assistance and were surprised to discover it wasn’t forthcoming. We were told: ‘You are a right-wing organization’, ‘you are extreme right-wing’, and there were also those who hinted that it bothers them that helping us may hurt the Palestinian Authority. We couldn’t believe that politics was being involved in this story too.”

According to Dromi, “This is a noble cause and we just didn’t expect their unwillingness to help, so we decided to turn to the public.”

Dromi launched an internet campaign to raise funds and to call for assistance in recruiting specialist doctors to conduct the necessary medical examinations and to compose a summary to be submitted to the court.

“We regard it as our moral obligation to assist these people who risked themselves and their families for the sake of Israel’s security,” stresses Dromi. “All assistance and volunteering is of great benefit.”

PBS Broadcasts Crusade Myths & Falsehoods

“The advertising for the new film” The Sultan and the Saint “suggests it presents revisionist history in line with the modernist ecumenical agenda,” wrote in 2016 Dr. Benjamin J. Vail (OFS), an American Secular Franciscan. The finished film, shown to this author and others last April, thoroughly vindicated Vail, and is now offering hackneyed Crusade myths to the public via PBS, which broadcast the film December 26 and now offers it for online viewing.

Focusing on the 1219 encounter between St. Francis of Assisi and Sultan Al-Malik al-Kamil during the Fifth Crusade, the film reflects popular falsehoods about the Crusades accepted even by President Barack Obama. Ignoring reality, the PBS film website declares that the “film sheds light on the crusades origins of dehumanizing rhetoric towards non-Europeans and non-Christians” that “resulted in four generations of escalating conflict.” Falsely suggesting that current global hostilities involving Muslims result from insufficient dialogue, the website declares that the film “inspires solutions for the negative atmosphere we find ourselves in today.”

PBS’ online portrayal of Fifth Crusade historical figures is equally fallacious, such as in the statement that St. Francis wanted “to oppose the bloodshed of the Fifth Crusade.” Meanwhile, crusader commander John of Brienne has base motives in PBS’ description: “Like many who were motivated to join the Crusades, John might have thought he could improve his lot and gain land, nobility and fame in the Holy Land.” At the website of the film’s pro-Islam producer, Unity Productions Foundation (UPF), Cardiff University professor and film expert Helen Nicholson cynically states that “for these people, the Crusade is a gift from God.”

Nicholson appears in the film alongside journalist Paul Moses, author of The Saint and the Sultan: The Crusades, Islam, and Francis of Assisi’s Mission of Peace, and his prior statements clearly show his influence upon the film. In various 2013 book presentations, he presented Francis as a pacifist, as someone who “quietly opposed the Crusade,” and as someone who “never spoke in a disparaging way about Islam or Muslims.” By contrast, Francis’ era was a “time when the church had become corrupt and violent” and knew how to “cherry pick through scripture” in order to find “supposed Biblical grounds” for the Crusades.

While Francis appears in Moses’ book presentations as out of character for a crusading Christendom, supposedly al-Kamil’s “actions show him to be a good Muslim.” The sultan “reflected Islamic traditions, including respect for Christian holiness, and also his constant pursuit of alternatives to war.” Referencing Saladin, the famed Muslim leader during the Third Crusade, Moses argued in a December 20 interview that the sultan’s benign behavior “came straight out of Islamic teachings, which the sultan, a nephew of Saladin, knew well.”

The film confirms the 2016 suspicions of Vail, who noted that the “film’s advertising implies that the crusades were evil both in intent and in practice,” a “common misconception used as a slur against the Church.” Leading Crusades historian Thomas F. Madden, for example, has contradicted Nicholson. The “crusading knights were generally wealthy men with plenty of their own land in Europe,” and the “Crusades were notoriously bad for plunder.”

As Madden elaborates, the Crusades

were not the brainchild of an ambitious pope or rapacious knights but a response to more than four centuries of conquests in which Muslims had already captured two-thirds of the old Christian world. At some point, Christianity as a faith and a culture had to defend itself or be subsumed by Islam.

The Crusades were a Christian reaction to centuries of Islamic jihadist aggression that directly targeted the Catholic Church and Francis’ followers. Frank M. Rega, a Secular Franciscan and author of Francis of Assisi and the Conversion of the Muslims, has noted that an army of 11,000 Muslims sacked Rome itself in 846 and desecrated the tombs of saints Peter and Paul. Rega’s fellow Secular Franciscan Vail noted that Muslims later in 1240 attacked the Franciscan Poor Clare monastery in Assisi, which the order’s founder herself, St. Clare, successfully defended.

Contrary to Moses’ claims, Rega has observed that “unreserved support of the crusade had become normative in the Order” of St. Francis. Rega’s book noted Francis’ praise for “holy martyrs died fighting for the Faith of Christ.” Vail also observed that “one leader of later crusades was St. Louis IX, the king of France, a Franciscan tertiary who is now patron saint of the Secular Franciscan Order.”

Francis personally reflected such sentiments when he crossed the front between the Christians and Muslims fighting around Damietta, Egypt, on a personal evangelization mission to the sultan. Rega noted Francis’ words to the sultan: “It is just that Christians invade the land you inhabit, for you blaspheme the name of Christ and alienate everyone you can from His worship.” Francis’ frank words reflect that he “was fully prepared for martyrdom” and initially experienced rough treatment in Muslim hands, as the film portrays. As Rega’s book has noted, al-Kamil had vowed that “anyone who brought him the head of a Christian should be awarded with a Byzantine gold piece.”

Contrary to Moses’ assertions, Francis’ behavior exemplified the common practice of his order in which friars often sought martyrdom by direct rhetorical challenges to Islam. Reflecting the negative judgment of Catholic saints upon Islam throughout history, Francis in Rega’s book tells the sultan that “if you die while holding to your law [sharia], you will be lost; God will not accept your soul.” As Notre Dame University Professor Lawrence Cunningham has observed, Francis “saw himself and his friars as Knights of the Round Table fighting a spiritual crusade.”

Meanwhile the film juxtaposes Crusader atrocities like the 1099 sack of Jerusalem with al-Kamil’s often tolerant behavior in yet another cinematic distortion of the past. Following Moses’ lead, the film presents such tolerance as the logical result of Islamic doctrine, but the biography of Moses’ hero Saladin tells a different story. As Crusades historian Andrew Holt has noted, “[o]ften Saladin could be just as brutal as the less noble minded military rulers of his era, but those actions are typically not highlighted in modern accounts.”

Saladin’s atrocities include the 1169 slaughter of 50,000 disarmed Sudanese soldiers in Cairo, Egypt, in breach of a surrender agreement after he had suppressed their rebellion. Following his 1187 decisive defeat of Crusaders in the Holy Land at the Battle of Hattin, Saladin had executed with religious ritual some 230 captured Knights Templar and Knights of St. John Hospitallers. After Hattin, Saladin considered sacking Jerusalem like the Crusaders before him, but its desperate defenders warned him that without a pardon guarantee they would fight to the bitter end and destroy the city’s Muslim holy sites. He therefore relented and ransomed the city’s population, but an estimated 8,000 could not pay and became slaves, among whom the women suffered mass rape, a practice common among armies of the era.

The film simply offers no context for its portrayal of a brutal era in which warfare rules held that besieged cities that did not surrender like Jerusalem in 1099 were subject to massacre and pillage. Muslims later repaid the Crusaders in kind during the 1291 sack of Acre, and the era’s Muslim armies often committed atrocities against surrendered city populations in violation of pledged mercy. By contrast, some evidence suggests to Holt that crusaders during the First Crusade that captured Jerusalem refrained from the common medieval practice of raping captive women.

In the midst of such violence, al-Kamil presents an appealing figure in the film, yet he might not have been an ordinary Muslim. Concurring with Moses, Cunningham has noted that when Francis went to al-Kamil, ultimately the “caliph did receive him kindly; he may have been a Sufi — a Muslim mystic — who want to identify mystically with the love of Allah.” Al-Kamil “may have had an instinctual sympathy for Francis, whom he probably saw as a holy man.” Al-Kamil also had a history of tolerance toward his Coptic Christian subjects in Egypt, although even this leniency had its limits under repressive Islamic dhimmi norms for non-Muslims.

The attention given by Catholics like Moses to Sufis like al-Kamil has a tradition, the Catholic writer and former academic William Kilpatrick has observed: “To the extent that they are interested in Islam, Catholic thinkers tend to be focused on its mystical, Sufi manifestations rather than on its mainstream, legalistic, and supremacist side.” Many Catholics like Francis’ namesake, the current Pope Francis, want “to put a Christian face on Islam.”

Yet Catholic writer John Zmirak has analyzed respectively the doctrines of Islam and Christianity’s founders to demonstrate that “ISIS Are to Muhammad What Franciscans Are to Jesus.” No celluloid interfaith, multicultural agitprop from PBS can change these facts by repackaging shopworn canards about Christianity for the Christmas season. The question remains for a forthcoming article, what is the nature of the people at UPF and its associates who helped produce the delusion of The Sultan and the Saint?

Hundreds of Muslims storm church, destroy its contents, assault Christians inside it

Islamic law forbids Christians to build new churches or repair old ones. The international establishment media will take little notice of this. But imagine the international outcry if non-Muslims anywhere stormed a mosque. From the ubiquitous “Islamophobia” propaganda, one might get the impression that such things happen all the time. In reality, they never do.

“Coptic diocese says hundreds assault church in Egypt,” Associated Press, December 23, 2017:

CAIRO (AP) — Hundreds of Muslim demonstrators assaulted an unlicensed church south of Cairo, an Egyptian Coptic Christian diocese said on Saturday, in the latest assault on members of the country’s Coptic minority.

The incident took place after Friday prayers when demonstrators gathered outside the building and stormed it. The demonstrators chanted hostile slogans and called for the church’s demolition, the diocese in Atfih said. The demonstrators destroyed the church’s contents and assaulted Christians inside before security personnel arrived and dispersed them.

The wounded were transferred to a nearby hospital but didn’t elaborate.

The church in Giza just outside of Cairo is yet to be sanctioned by the state but has been observing prayers for 15 years. The diocese said it had officially sought to legalize the building’s status under a 2016 law that laid down the rules for building churches.

Local authorities often refuse to give building permits for new churches, fearing protests by Muslim conservatives. That has prompted Christians to illegally build churches or set up churches in other buildings. In contrast, building a mosque results in few restrictions….
